英語関連と言うだけで

面白いな~とついついあちこちの

記事を読み漁ったりしてます♪

Recently I've been having fun reading various English related blog entries at Hatena Blog. Anything English learning related I actually find pretty interesting to read, be it about English words and phrases, living in an English-speaking country, raising English-literate children, books in English, or anything at all.

 

そこでせっかくなので何か私も

英語で小ネタを一つ! と思ったのですが

特に人様の為になるようなお話は

何も思い浮かばなかったです…!

So since I find it fun reading these English related entries, I figured I'd like to write something about English too. Unfortunately though, I can't think of any topic or subject that would be of any actual help to anybody lol

 

ただなぜかふと子供のときの思い出が

浮かんできたのでそのお話しをば…

The only thing that somehow just came to my mind was a childhood memory of mine.

 

渡米したのが小学生の頃なんですが

こっちって年に何回かは

お家で作った料理を皆にシェアする

みたいな行事があったんですね

I moved to the U.S. when I was in elemetary school. At the time there were potluck kind of events to bring and share foods cooked at home. (I don't think that's done these days for safety reasons.)

 

で、うちはせっかくなので和食を!

とおにぎりや五目ちらしなどを

母が持たせてくれていたんですよ

So of course, I brought Japanese dishes like onigiri and sushi that my mom prepared for me.

 

おにぎりの海苔も黒い紙みたいで

結構「何これ」感があったのですが、

「だいじょぶだいじょぶ」みたいなノリで

クラスメートに食べさせたりしました

We were in a pretty rural area with very few Asians around. So people had somewhat of an adverse reaction to nori, or dried seaweed that looks like black thin paper. I'd just tell them they're edible and that they can eat it and some of them tried.

 

ただ、それ以上に今印象に残っているのが

 寒 天

だったりします

However, the one dish that stuck with me the most was the Japanese jello made with processed seaweed, "kanten".

 

せっかく持ってったものを

「ライスボール」やら「スシ」やら

で説明してたわけなんですが、

寒天だけはわからなくて辞書で調べました

Onigiri, I translated as "rice ball" and sushi, just "sushi" or "vinegared rice", but I had no idea how to translate or explain "kanten". (I don't recall if I knew that it was made from seaweed.)

 

で、当時辞書には

「アガーアガー」

って載ってて、言った方も言われた方も

「なにそれ?」

状態でした(笑)

So when I looked up the word in a dictionary at the time, it said "agar-agar". I had no clue if that were correct, and no one knew what that was anyway lol

 

今でこそお菓子作りに一般的(?)に

使われている印象のある「アガー」ですが

ほんと、当時は「アガー」って?

これほんとにそんな言葉でいいの?

って感じでした(笑)

Nowadays, if you watch people making desserts on YouTube, there are many clips where you can see them using agar-agar, or just simply agar. But at the time, I was like what on earth? There's such a word? There's such a thing?

 

当時はインターネットも携帯もなくて

小さな和英英和辞書を持ち歩いてました

時代ってほんとに凄いな~と思います

We had no Internet, no cellphone, and I walked around with a tiny English-Japanese/Japanese-English dictionary. Technology is amazing.

 

今なら一発で検索できますものね!

You can look up things in a mere matter of seconds!

 

そして検索したらどうやらアガーは

厳密に言うと日本の寒天とは違う

とかなんとか

海藻の種類が違うみたいですね

I happened to look up agar the other day, and I learned that it made from a similar type of seaweed as kanten, but it's not the same. So I guess the dictionary was semi-correct just not entirely.

 

当時の自分に教えてあげたかったです(笑)

Wish I could go back and explain to the young me, as well as the people around me at that time lol

So anyway, I has to*1 get myself working on my song video! I'm almost there, maybe! Davinci Resolve is a tad a bit difficult for a complete amateur...!
