Hatena Blog Design Styles

Hellos and welcome, dear readers!

This is Taka Pen, enjoying the sunny autumn weather with the crisp fresh air outside. (Although supposedly it's gonna rain tomorrow. Oh, well. I'll walk on my treadmill. lol)

So anyway, as I've been blogging on Hatena Blog, I've been wondering about how to do some of the font/pagaraph/page styles. This entry is mainly a memo to myself on my findings on how to do some of the things.

My Questions

I've been browsing around various blogs on Hatena Blog because I wanted to see how people were writing blogs and what kind of blogs there were around.

And I've been noticing some cools stuff on people's blogs, like index areas, blocked off quotations, and things like that.

At first I just thought that maybe you could do those with default functions that Hatena Blog provides; however, I've found out otherwise as I started writing a few entries.

So I googled on how people were doing them. And apparently, Hatena Blog lets you customize various font/page styles by using CSS.

CSS, in case you aren't familiar with it, is like a semi-programming language (or part of one I guess?) that lets you specify how things look on your webpages.

I used to do a bit of HTML in the very old days and did take a look at CSS when those things came out, but it was too much like programming for me, so I can copy and paste, but not really utilize them.

How to Insert an Index

I wanted to use index for my blog entries, but I couldn't really figure out how to do it.

Hatena Blog does provide an index function when you're creating an entry, but for the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to use it. I'd click on it, check in preview, and nothing would show up. So I'd actually forgotten that this function was even there.

So this time I actually went to look up how to insert the index. Apparently all I needed to do was change the font of any line I want to use in an index to "header" and the index function would work. Wasn't as intuitive as I'd hoped. lol

The below blog entry explained the process, and that's where I managed to use the index function for this blog entry.

*All the blogs referred to in this entry are written in Japanese

okane7.com

And if you already know how to use the index function, just want different styles, there are blogs that offer CSS formats to copy from, like the one below:

www.fuji-blo.com

I actually looked up the index thing for the first time when I started writing this blog entry. That's why my past blog entries do not have any indices (is that the right plural for index...?).

Customizing Quotation Blocks

In order to write about how I do translyrics, quotations are a must.

THE引用!

I've seen in other Hatena Blog entries blocked off quotations that look pretty cool, and it looked like everyone was using the style, so I kind of assumed that was the default styling by Hatena Blog. Wrong. It wasn't. Apparently everybody's using the same CSS customization. lol

So I went to below blog and obtained the CSS code.

*All the blogs referred to in this entry are written in Japanese

www.bambi.red

Adjusting Line Spacing

So I've been writing (in Japanese right now) about my translation process and explanation, but it's getting pretty long.

And it's been hovering on the edge of my mind that the line spacing seems pretty huge.

So I googled it once again, and it seems like the line spacing has been bothering other people as well, so there's once again, a CSS code to customize the line spacing. How neat is that!

And I got the code from below blog:

Lastly

When I went to look for these how-to blogs, I saw these "affiliate" things. Not sure what they're called in English, but basically they're things that let you earn a bit of money by directing people to other websites through various ads. I think. Really not sure how they work. lol

I've been pasting the URL to these affiliated blogs, but I just wanted to clarify that my blog has absolutely nothing to do with earning money (at least not yet! :P). Just wanted to gather the URL of blogs that I personally found useful in shaping my Hatena Blog formats.

So going forward, I should be able to make use of the index function, and make the blog entries tidy up a bit more, rather than sprawled out all over.

Anyway, I believe my next blog entry should be the translyrics explanation for "Ichiban Boshi Sonority" in Japanese. English will follow a little later.

Thanks for reading! Taka Pen out!
