タカペン - Taka Pen's Blurt-Log

英訳歌詞とか日常 - Translyrics and Stuff

初・本の紹介 / My First Book Review

こんにちは!

Hellos and welcome, dear readers!

まだまだ仕事納まらない

タカペンです!

金曜日まで普通にお仕事!

Commute this morning was a breeze there was so little traffic! I guess everyone's off this week while yours trully will be working through this Friday!

ブログの内容は、

あれこれ書きたいことあるのですが

ずっとはてなブログ英語多読

グループに入っていながら

一度も本の紹介ができていないので

今日こそは!

と言うのと

ふと懐かしくなった本があったので

少しだけ紹介をしてみようと

I've a lot that I want to write about, but for this entry, I decided to finally write a book review. After all, I've been in the English book review group on Hatena Blog for months now without a single book recommendation! High time I rectify that error! :)

本の紹介 / About the Book

今回ご紹介したいのは

私がミドルスクールのときに

読んだ本です

The book I'd like to write about is one that I read when I was in middle school.

題名/Title: The Changeling Sea

作者/Author: Patricia A. McKillip

今でもアマゾンで買えるんですね! / You can buy it on Amazon, it's still in print!

内容は何を隠そう

全く覚えてません(笑)

To be completely hones, I don't actually remember much of the story itself. lol

私の中のキーワードは

ペリウィンクルと海と魔法使いのお兄さん

です(笑)

All I remember are the following keywords: periwinkle, the sea, and the magician.

なのでアマゾンの商品ページの

紹介文をまず読んで

少し思い出してみましたが…

So I read the summary on Amazon so I can recall more about the novel...

主人公はペリと言う名前の少女

お父さんが海から帰らぬ人となり

お母さんもそのときから

ずっと海を眺めているだけの

抜け殻みたいになってしまい…

Peri is a girl who lives by the sea with her parents until one day, her father fails to return from the sea. And from that day onward, her mother sits by the window staring at the window, her soul also lost at sea.

海が全ての現況だと

恨んで

海に魔法をかけます

Peri takes out her sorrow and anger at the sea, and she hexes the sea.

どうせ自分の魔法なんか

海に何も影響与えられないし

After all, it's not as if her little magic would be able to do anything to the enormous sea, or so she thought.

けれどその魔法に

かかってしまった王子様や

通りすがり(だったっけ)の

魔法使いのお兄さんなどと

出会い、そこから

ペリの物語は展開していきます

But her magic nets in a prince (or was there more than one, maybe?), and a travelling magician comes by to help her with magic.

ジャンルは

  • ファンタジー
  • 成長期
  • ほんのり恋愛

みたいな感じだと思います

The genre of the novel you could say is a mix of fantasy, a tale of growth, and a bit of romance sprinkled in.

凄い冒険、とかはないので

多分男性よりも女性向けです

There's not a great adventure or anything, so maybe male readers won't enjoy the novel as much as female readers may.

タカペンの思い出 / My Memories of the Book

学生時代は寝る時間を削って

ほぼ1日1冊本を読んでました

When I was a teenager, I used to stay up almost until the morning and read about book a day.

ネタバレ大嫌い、新しいもの大好き

なタカペンなので、基本的に

一度読んだものは二度読まない

主義なのですが

The Changeling Sea

だけは本が擦り切れる程

何度も読み返しました(笑)

I hate spoilers and I love learning new things more than anything, so I very rarely reread any of the books I read. But Patricia A. McKillip's The Changeling Sea, I'd reread so many times so that the book got pretty tattered.

ネタバレなしで語れないので

あまり何も言えませんが

切ないけれど、悲しくはない

「そっか、良かったね」

と心がほんのり温まるお話です

I can't really tell much about my experience with the story without giving away spoilers, but suffice to say that although the story has a bittersweet feel to it throughout the book, it's got an ending that makes sense and personally, feels good.

子供向け? みたいな

雰囲気がありますが、

当時普通に大人向けの

SF・ファンタジー置き場に

あったので、英語はそこまで

易しくはないかもしれません

When I went to find the book today, I read somewhere that this novel is geared towards children, but when I bought the book, it was on a shelf along with other sci-fi and fantasy novels for adults, so I don't think the language is really that geared towards children.

でもとても良いお話しなので

いつかお時間があったら

読んでみてください!

It might not be an easy read, but I highly recommend the book to anyone who enjoys reading good fantasy novels.

記憶に残った単語 / Vocabulary That Stuck With Me

当時まだミドルスクーラー

だったので、タカペンも

まだ語彙力がありませんでした

At the time, when I read the book, I was a middle schooler and my vocabulary wasn't as expansive as it was by the time I had finished high school.

そんなタカペンがこの本で

覚えた単語は今でも記憶に

残っています

I was still picking up new words and phrases from the books I was reading, and in this book there are two words that have stuck with me to this day.

periwinkle

お花でもあり、色でもあると

この本で覚えました

I learned that a periwinkle was a type of bluish flower and that it was also the name of a color. (And I learned that in a really nice way too.)

en.wikipedia.org

hex

「呪う」とか「魔法をかける」

と言う意味

"Hex" means to use a spell to affect someone or thing negatively.

タカペンはSF・ファンタジー

ジャンルばかり読むのですが

正直必要のない英単語やフレーズを

覚えまくった感は否めません

Yours truly reads mostly sci-fi and fantasy, so I have to say that there's a lot in my vocabulary that are totally useless for everyday conversation.

hex なんてファンタジーの本以外で

ほとんど知る必要のない単語ではないかと(笑)

I highly doubt you'd see the word "hex" in any context that does not mention magic and witches, and when do you ever talk about those in daily conversations except maybe on Halloween!

日本語版 / Japanese Translation

今回アマゾンにあるかな

と本を探した際に

日本語版を見つけました

When I was looking to see if I can find the book on Amazon, Japan, I also found a translated version.

大人が読んでほんわかする

お話にこの表紙は

なんかちょっと

子供向けすぎる感がありますが

To me, the novel is not written for children, so this cover art is somewhat lacking in sophistication...

まぁでも翻訳されてるだけでも

凄いことですね!

But I guess just the fact that the novel was translated at all is an awesome thing!

と言うか、この作者さんの本

全部凄いんですけど!

I mean I'd say everything written by this author is just amazing, and they should all be translated into all lanaguagse, if not already! :)

とゆーことで

とりあえずタカペンの

初の本のご紹介は

以上になります

So anyway, this is it for my first book review!

ここまでお付き合いくださり

ありがとうございました!

Thank you for reading this far as always!

次は動画とか写メで日常とかの

お話になると思います

また次の記事でお会いしましょう!

I'll likely be back to writing about my translated cover videos and daily pics in my next entry. Until then!

ではではっ!

Taka, out!
