今日はさくっとアメリカと日本の
みかんの違いを書きたいと思います
So today, I mean to write a short article about oranges in Japan and the U.S.

渡米してびっくりしたこと / What Surprised Me When I First Came to the U.S.
タカペンはミカンが大好きです
みかんの皮を加えて両手を
だいだい色に染めながら
ピースしてる子供の頃の写真が
あるくらいにちっちゃいころから
大好きでした
As a very young child in Japan, I loved "mikan" or what's known in the U.S. now as the mandarin oranges.
渡米後、そんなみかん好きの
タカペンを待っていたのは
非情な現実で
When my family and I moved to the U.S., however...
みかんがなかったんです
There were no mandarin oranges
そうなんです
That's right.
タカペンが渡米したとき
アメリカのスーパーで
みかんは売ってませんでした
Way back then, there were no mandarin oranges sold at the supermarkets...! Hard to believe now.
当時アメリカのスーパーには
オレンジしかありませんでした
There were only your regular oranges sold at the supermarkets.

いえ、まぁ嫌いじゃなかったし
むしろ好きでしたが、
みかんのように手でかわをむいて
と言う食べ方はあまりせず
包丁で切りわけて、かぶりついて
と言う食べ方で、
みかんじゃなかったんです・・・！！！
I mean I didn't dislike oranges, but compared to the mandarin oranges where you can peel cleanly and eat each cluster neatly, the simplest way to eat oranges was to cut them and suck them. It just wasn't the same.

ちょっと別のお話になりますが
オレンジと言えば、アメリカでは
とにかくオレンジジュースが多いです
On the bright side, orange juice was and still is a very common commodity in the U.S.
日本にいた頃、タカペンのおうちでは
基本飲料が水か牛乳だけだったので
渡米後そこにオレンジジュースが加わり
ちょっと嬉しかったような気がします
When I was back in Japan, our family stape drinks were water and milk. We started drinking orange juice when we came to the U.S., so that was a bit of a plus.
ただ、日本のみかんジュース程
甘くなく、結構すっぱいですが（笑）
Just that compared to the orange juice in Japan, the American orange juice isn't as sweet and a bit more tart.
アメリカみかんの現状 / The Oranges in The U.S. Now
さて、では現状どうなっているのか
と言いますと
So what about now?
上記のようなミカンが
もう最近では普通に
スーパーで売られています
As you can see, mandarin oranges have become a common thing at the grocery store.
サイズの比較対象の為に
パイの実も一緒に写ってます（笑）
Just for size reference, I also took a picture of "pai no mi" which is a pie based layered snacks common in Japan. (They were on sale at the Japanese store lol)
むしろ種類が
Clementine
Tangerine
Mandarin
とか、色々
あるっぽいです
Now we have clementines, tangerines, and mandarins.
厳密に言うと
Mandarinの種類に
Clementine と Tangerineが
あるみたいですが
タカペンよくわかってません（笑）
Or actually, when I looked them up, it seems like clementines and tangerines are both types of mandarin oranges.
デコポンっぽいものまでも
売ってたりして、今では
ちっちゃいみかんだらけです
Not only the standard clementines and tangerines, you can see all sorts of other types of small oranges sold at some stores. I have Whole Foods in mind because they have a variety of the small oranges.
Clementineは
ちょっと味がぼやけていて
水分もすかすかしてるときが
多い印象です
Clementines imo aren't as flavorful as tangerines and sometimes they feel like there's not much juice in them.
Tangerineは
Clementineよりもちょっと
ちっちゃめで
すっぱめで
瑞々しくて美味しい印象です
Tangerines, on the other hand, are a bit smaller in size compared to clementines, and they're tangier and juicier.
なので大体Tangerineの方が
好きなのですが、たまに
すっぱすぎるので、
Clementineも嫌いじゃないです
So I usually go for the tangerines, but sometimes they're a bit too tart so I'm okay with clementines at times.
そんなこんなで今では
冬場はみかんが食べられる
アメリカになって
嬉しいタカペンなのでした☆ミ
It's funny. I buy mandarin oranges like it's a regular thing now, but when I look back, we didn't use to have them in the U.S. when I was little. It's awesome how food is also globalized and you get to eat all sorts of tasty things from around the world. :)
