Black Morphs

Hellos and welcome, dear readers!

Back from a brisk walk!

I saw something during my walk that made me so excited that I needed to write a whole blog entry about it. lol

The Meeting

Work was stressing me out, so I was taking a walk to calm myself down.

And as I was walking, a bit ahead, I saw a small black thing hop across a small clearin ing the woods.

With that size, the color, and the way it hopped...

it wouldn't have been a squirrel or an opossum because of the color, and the black thing was a bit too fast for it to have been a raccoon or a ground hog.

猫?

A cat,

かな?

maybe?

Was what flashed through my mind when I saw the thing.

But it quickly faded from my mind in my anger and stress at work. lol

So I'd kept on walking when suddenly, the small thing came running down the patch of grass by the sidewalk.

Wait a sec!

That's a black squirrel!!

Not somethin you'd see everyday!

It made me pause in my tracks, which made the squirrel pause in its tracks and run behind a tree.

I really wanted to have another glimpse at it, so I went around to the other side of the tree, and I could see the squirrel on the branch above, but the sun was also in my eye, so I couldn't really see it well.

So I tried going around the tree to the other side, but because of the placement of the tree, I had to get closer to the tree on that side.

Which unfortunately made the squirrel even warier of me, so instead of staying on top of the branch, it went around the tree on the side opposite of where I was.

見えない

Which meant, I couldn't see it at all.

I could tell that the squirrel was on the other side of the tree, but I just wasn't in a position to see it.

and all I wanted to do was get another good look...

And so... Me and the squirrel went around and around the tree, me wanting to see it, and the squirrel hiding from me. lol

Squirrels usually look like furrier version of rats, but for some reason, black squirrels look much cuter, maybe because of the coloring.

So I wanted to see more of it, but... lol

Wiki

Didn't have my phone on me, so I wasn't able to take a pic, so I'm gonna just stick in an URL to the wiki for the black squirrel, so you can have an idea what it looks like. :)

My First Encounter with a Black Squirrel

Black squirrels seem to be pretty scarce, so unless you're a squirrel watcher or something, I doubt you'd happen across them too often.

I've maybe seen them three times total in all my time here in the U.S. (And that's a few decades!)

The very first time I saw a black squirrel was also in the dead of winter, and might have been my first winter in the U.S.

I was on my way to school on the school bus one cold winter morning. The bus passes through a pretty big patch of wooded area.

The bare trees and the ground were all covered in mounds of white snow.

I was watching the wintry landscape when I saw a tiny black squirrel scampering on the ground.

That was when my eyesight was still sharp and I could see even at a distance that it was a black squirrel.

Having come to the U.S., one of the things that surprised me was the number of wild squirrels but I'd gotten used to them quickly since they were everywhere. But a black squirrel, I had never seen.

So I was like omg it's a black squirrel!!

And sat up in my seat to look at it, but it quickly faded from view.

Black squirrels, I don't know if it's because of their pigment abberation or just because of the color, they look smaller.

And because they look smaller, they seem quicker and cuter than the normal squirrels. lol

Even at that time, it was quite a surprise to see a black squirrel, so even decades later, the memory of the black squirrel still stays with me.

And that memory came back when I saw the black squirrel today. lol

This time, I saw it so much closer than when I was little, so that was kind of nice. :)

And so, that's my story with black squirrels.

Thanks for reading this far as always!
