Taka Pen's Blurt-Log

Translyrics and Stuff

Do you mind...?

Hellos and welcome, dear readers!

Long time no see!

I've been getting sick, getting better, and then getting sick again over and over. It's been a vicious cycle that hopefully I've finally broken!

So this is a short blurb just to let you know I haven't left my blog! And to write another piece of my childhood memory with English.

"mind" の思い出 / Me and "Mind"

When I first came over to the U.S. with my family, I had maybe five words in my English vocabulary.

Regardless of my lack of English, I still had to get on the school bus and go to school.

On the school bus, I can't remember if it was my very first time or not getting on the school bus, but the bus was full and there were nowhere to sit except for one spot next to another student. So I went over and asked them,

"Do you mind if I sit here?"

I think I leanred the phrase from my parents.

相手は "No!"

They responded with a very happy "No!"

To which my reaction was...

え、No?

Um, wait, no? Does that mean they don't want me to sit there? But there's nowhere else to sit, and they don't look like they're saying no. What'm I supposed to do???

I was close to tears but there was nowhere else to sit, so I sat next to the child who told me "no."

Later on, I understood what I misunderstood. I'd asked if they would mind and they responded that no, they wouldn't mind.

But at that time, I didn't understand what "do you mind if...?" meant so I thought I was asking "Can I sit here?" and that they were telling me "No, you can't."

I felt so lost and hopeless that the moment has stuck with me to this day. lol

I'm sure no one learning English at an older age would make the same mistake I had made, but I just wanted to share this tiny episode to show what it was like surviving in a country when you don't speak the language spoken.

Anyway, thanks for reading this far as always!

Hopefully I'll be seeing you next in my explanations in Japanese and English for the translation of the Escaflowne song...!
